The most common mistake in new-build telecom planning is leaving it to the end. The result is insufficient conduit, badly located technical rooms, no rack space reserve and, for hotels, an installation already too small before opening.
Telecom planning phases in construction
01Basic design: network architecture definition
In the basic design phase, decide the network architecture: GPON or Ethernet, location of the main technical room, number of floor distribution frames, main conduit routes and roof space reservation for satellite and telecom antennas.
02Execution project: ICT and telecom drawings
The ICT project (Common Telecommunications Infrastructure) defines conduit routes, technical specifications and serves as the basis for regulatory approval. It is mandatory for residential buildings in Spain and essential for hotels and commercial buildings seeking compliance.
03Installation execution: coordination with construction works
Telecom installation must be coordinated with structure, electrical and plumbing trades so conduits pass where they should with adequate space. A coordination failure can force opening finished walls.
04Commissioning and documentation
As-built documentation (actual installation drawings, certification reports) is the guarantee for the client and the foundation for any future maintenance. Without documentation, the building delivers a technical asset with no history.
