Telecom infrastructure needs periodic maintenance to maintain performance and avoid unexpected failures. Unlike lifts or fire systems, network maintenance is not regulated — and many managers overlook it until there is a failure.
What a preventive maintenance plan includes
🔍Cabinet and cabling inspection
Physical inspection of patch panel condition, patch cables, cable managers and connectivity. Deteriorated patch cables are the most frequent cause of intermittent performance loss — difficult to detect without a physical inspection.
⚡UPS battery status
Telecom cabinet UPS batteries have a 3-5 year useful life. A degraded battery that goes undetected can make the UPS fail exactly when needed — during a power cut.
📊Performance and log analysis
Review of switch, AP and router logs to detect errors, interfaces with high retransmission rates or devices approaching maximum capacity. Many performance issues are visible weeks before they become a failure.
🔄Firmware updates
Manufacturers publish firmware updates that fix security vulnerabilities and improve stability. A switch or AP with firmware 2-3 years out of date may have known vulnerabilities compromising network security.
Recommended maintenance schedule
Monthly (remote)
- Active equipment availability check
- Critical alarms and events review
- Configuration backup verification
- UPS battery status (if monitored)
Bi-annual (on-site)
- Physical inspection of cabinets and cabling
- UPS load switchover test
- Cabinet filter cleaning and ventilation check
- Scheduled firmware updates
Annual (full review)
- Full performance audit
- Critical link certification check
- Network contingency plan review
- As-built documentation update
